X-Files 2: The return of Mulder et al.

When I was in high school I loved the X-Files. It had one of the greatest opening theme songs of all time. On the creepiness level, it was only matched by Robert Stack and the Unsolved Mysteries opening theme.

After being off air for quite a long time, and most fans believing the show was long over before it technically stopped filming. (I say when Mulder was pulled from the show and replaced with the guy from Terminator). It has come back with movie. Was it time for another movie? Yeah I think so. What do I think of it now? Well… here is the cliff notes version of my review. The movie would have made a decent single episode, but it doesn’t stand well on its own as a movie.

The plot is surrounded around an FBI agent who is abducted because she swims at a local pool. Some priest dude has a psychic connection to case and is helping the FBI search her out. They don’t understand the freak priest and call on Mulder to help. He hasn’t done any FBI work in 10 years and looks like a mountain man. For all the paranormal stuff that went on during the show, they pick a little psychic connection to bring him out of hiding. I was hoping for something a little more grandeur like an alien invasion or werewolves, or talking trees, not a Frankenstein doctor and a psychic.. boring.

Anyway, there is lots of chasing, and fights, and guns being pointed and xzibit complaining about Mulder, and hot Scully ranting about child care. The movie wasn’t that great… if it were just a simple episode of the show, my opinion would have changed. It did make me realize how much I miss this show, and Fringe is not much of a substitute, but yet I watch.

Is it worth a rent? Yeah for all you X-Files fans out there, if you weren’t a fan of the show stay away. I give it 7 bleeding eye pedophile psychic priests out of 10.

Another bad movie review: Hancock

I’m lazy.  I have some great idea for some blog posts, and well then I get lazy and don’t do them.  I just finished some work I had to do, so I figured I’d blog.  I write movie reviews, and I doubt anyone reads them, but here is another one.

I rented Hancock this weekend.  I wasn’t expecting much, it wasn’t very much of a movie, but overall, it was worth $5 and 2 hours of my time.

They tried a new approach to the super hero genre that has been making millions, and millions, actually probably billions of dollars over the last few years.  There have been some great super hero movies and some not so great ones *cough*spiderman3*cough.  This came across somewhere in the middle of the mediocore gooey center of that list.

They tried to be edgy, Hancock is this angry old drunk who likes nobody, mr. arrested development comes and perks him up.  He saves the day, there is a twist, a hot girl is involved in the middle and a happy ending.  Your usual affair.  The movie really could have been awesome, if it had ended about 5 minutes before it actually did.  Just one time I want Hollywood not setup a sequal.  It would have really stood out as something different.  Oh well, it made 100mil+… what do you expect? Will Smith’s is like an instant guaranteed 100mil at the box office.  It’s just as automatic as Tim Horton’s coffee making me feel like the day has started.

Overall I give it 6.5 broken buildings out of 10.

Movie Review: Burn After Reading.

The Coen brothers are masters of their art.  Famous for such notable films such as The Big Lebowski, Fargo, and recently No Country For Old Men, which won best picture this past year.  They recently attempted a go at another dark comedy which recently previewed itself at the Toronto Film Festival to decently good reviews.  Containing ‘A’ list actors such as George Clooney, Brad Pitt and John Malcovich, it is a spoof on the spy comedy about a couple of dufusses who find a manuscript and think it’s actually worth something, and then their entire plan to make money goes to pot.

What made this movie for me was not so much the convoluted and wildly crazy plot, but simply the characters.  I often describe “The Office” as a character comedy, and that they characters make the show, and not so much the actual plot.  The same holds true for Burn After Reading.  As Brad Pitt’s character easily stole the show and made me laugh pretty much every time he was on screen.

This isn’t your average comedy, and there will be a segment of the population who just will not like the noir aspect of the film, but I for one appreciated it.  I love when a good movie is not even on my radar, I go see it on a whim and it turns out to be a decent escape from the stresses of life.

I give “Burn After Reading” 8 free hardbody memberships out of 10.  Don’t miss out on this great comedy, but you might want to wait for the DVD.

Movie Review: Dan IRL and The n9nes

I saw two movies this weekend, and I figured since I haven’t blogged in a while I’d write a couple quick reviews.  Cliff notes: Both were good, worth the money and your time.

Dan IRL

Jenn and I had a hard time the other night trying to rent a movie.  We sat in the rental store for probably 20 minutes throwing out names of this movie and that movie.  Either one of us had seen it or had absolutely no desire to.  We even ended up going to rent at another store just to get some more ideas.  In the end we dug through our own selfish desires and agreed upon the swear word of all movie renting.  *GASP* A romantic comedy.  *SHOCK*

Well, I obliged, cause I love Steve Carrell and think he can pretty much single handedly save almost any movie, except maybe Evin Almighty (which he almost did).  A quick rundown of the premise is that Steve’s character is trying to raise 3 daughters due to his wife dying 4 years prior and during a vacation he meets this great woman who ends up being his brother’s girlfriend.  Hilarious hi-jinx ensue, but all done in a realistic, indie style of comedy which comes across great.

Take notice movie makers and studios.  If you make a comedy that plays on the humours of real life, have actual funny plots and situations, people will enjoy it.  This was a breath of fresh air for me after hating on 27 dresses and all that other crap.

Kudos to Steve and the cast, excellent date flick.

I give this 8.5 burnt pancakes out of 10.

The n9nes

Not satisfied with just one movie, I went out and bought The n9nes on the recommendation of two kids from my youth group and instead of renting the movie for $5.50, I decided to buy it for $8.  Seeing as I am terrible at returning movies at times, I figured I’d pay the restocking fee up front and just keep it.

Anyway…. I can’t say much about the plot because it essentially ruin the movie.  But, imagine you were living the life of three different people all at the same time, but didn’t know it and you were a sane person.

The n9nes is a look at how our universe might possibly exist, and allowing your mind to go where the writer/director wants to take you is a fun way to do mental gymnastics and increase your flexibility.  It’s a different movie, not for everyone, but I liked it.

If you want to watch something that is all together different, a little bit of a mind bender, but yet clean and holesome this is the movie for you.  It’s worth the time and effort to watch once, maybe even twice through.  There are better movies, but you could do much worse.

Why was 10 scared of seven?  Cause 7 ate 9.

I give this movie 8 telepathic Koalas out of 10.
