This time last year a smart little comedy came out of no where. It was called Little Miss Sunshine and starred a great cast, had excellent dialog and a very peculiar story line. It was a formula that worked well and I enjoyed the movie a lot.
I got the exact same feeling from Juno. The movie is about a teenage girl who gets pregnant and struggles to deal with the entire process. She handles the entire situation with a quirky sense of humour and she easily carries the movie that involves some fairly well known actors that include Jennifer Garner, Michael Cera and Jason Bateman. We get to see Jason and Michael act together again after seeing them work together on Arrested Development, but in the end they don’t have any scenes together, which is a shame but makes sense in the context of the characters and story.
If you’re unsure what to watch this post holiday season and you’re tired of sugar coated overly bloated Hollywood stuffed movies then this is the flick for you. This is a movie about real people, going through real issues and the absurd reality we live in is what gives this movie it’s charm and humour. At the end of the film my friend who saw it with me stated that it felt “Canadian”, and if you’ve grown up in Canada and are used to shows such as Degrassi you’ll know exactly what he means. It had a great certain “je ne sai quoi” about it… and that is a good thing.
My hope after seeing this kind of film work so well two times that Hollywood starts to get it into their heads that audiences do not want to see Daddy Day Care 4 or Are we there yet 3. Give the masses intelligent well thought out comedies and I will reward you with my hard earned $8.99+tax.
It gets 8 blue slurpees out of a possible 10.
